A Mysterious Rainbow Beam Hit a Car !!
Road to IIT: Meet IITian Pragya

When Pragya Verma saw her IIT results at a cybercafé in Patna, her eyes became moist. In just moments, the stress of a 17-year journey completed in the sparing presence of her father, went away.
'My whole life flashed before me!' Her rank was 3001 out of 5000. Pragya, now in her fourth year at IIT Mumbai, is studying Integrated MSc programme in Chemistry.
Her mother and three siblings - a brother and two sisters - visit often, but her father has yet to. Very early in life, Pragya learnt to rely on herself. She and her brother were sent to a boarding school in Darjeeling. Pragya fondly remembers her Darjeeling days.
'I liked studying there. But then quite suddenly, her father started spending more time away from home, the household income was affected, and she and her brother were pulled out of boarding school and admitted to regular schools in Patna.
Pragya and her mother together managed the household, and her dad sent what he could. Being the eldest, she looked after her siblings and did household work. And when her father would come to visit them, she wouldn't be too excited. 'He would come to go back.'
When her classmates came with their fathers to school, she didn't miss her father. 'Patna isn't safe for women, but I don't depend on male company to accompany me I have learnt to manage on my own.' Because of this outlook, she feels she's different from the others.
Cracking the code
Until Class 9, Pragya was an average student. 'I had no ambitions perhaps it was because of the way things were at home.' But one day, her uncle, who was a code developer, came over and gave her an algorithm code to crack. 'It took me time, but I did. It was fascinating!' And before she realised, she became absorbed in math.
'When I started doing well in studies, I began to dream of a future. I wanted to achieve something.' Her uncle said that IIT would change her life, and after that all that mattered was getting into IIT. She scored 97 percent in math in Class 10.
In her first attempt at IIT-JEE, after her Class 12, Pragya got through Roorkee University where she got architecture. But she didn't enjoy the subject and quit the programme. So when she came across an article on Super 30, she was willing to risk a year. 'The only challenge was to get into Super 30, because once you are in it, half the battle is won as Super 30's success rate was excellent.'
Studying there along with sharp brains was a challenge. She would come home with doubts of getting through IIT, but her brother would encourage her. 'He believed in me and this revived my spirit. Of course, my mother has always supported me.' When Pragya looks back she says those were tough times.
She would wake up at 5 a.m. every morning, revise what she had studied the night before, and then help her mother in the kitchen. She would leave for college by 9.30 a.m. and be back by 4 p.m. buy vegetables on the way home, help her mother again, go through her brother's and sister's copy books, and then get back to studies. 'I have never had time for myself.' Until now her mother hasn't brought up the issue of marriage. 'That's not a priority for my mother or me I have to first fulfil my dreams.'
Sunset at Chowpatty
When the results came out in 2006, for the first time she had a real sense of achievement. 'I made my mother proud whom I have never seen resting. She's always doing something or the other.' So when the time came to leave home, Pragya worried about her mother's health. 'She only looks after us, but not herself. You know how mothers are.'
IIT Mumbai was Pragya's second choice and Guwahati first as both the IITs have a good faculty for both biotechnology and chemistry. 'I just wanted do a course where I could study both chemistry and biology I like the subjects very much. I want to be a researcher.'
On the first day in IIT Mumbai, she was nervous, but the atmosphere was such that 'I settled in very quickly'. Pragya's been awarded the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, so her semester fee, which is Rs. 25,000 (for four months), is now Rs. 8,000. And she says she manages her monthly expenses in just about Rs. 2,000.
She has a few close friends in college, but does not like to attach herself to a particular group. 'I prefer to be with everybody than take sides.' And when she gets the time, she heads to Chowpatty or Marine Drive, sits by the sea to watch the sunset. 'I am happy with my solitude.'

2,500-Year-Old Brain Examined!

Photograph courtesy York Archaeological Trust
A computer-generated scan of a 2,500-year-old human skull shows brain matter in dark gray. The lighter gray colors in the skull represent soil.
First dug up in 2008 by archaeologists in York, England (see map), the well-preserved brain prompted experts to investigate how the tissue had stayed in such good shape.
A new study released in March suggests that the skull had been quickly buried in a pit full of thick, wet clay—among several factors that may have helped prevent the brain from decomposing.
The cool, low-oxygen conditions of the soil may have aided in the brain's preservation, according to the study, published in March in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

One of the pieces of the ancient brain is seen after removal from the skull.
Analyses of the tissue and remains of the surrounding skull suggest the Iron Age brain belonged to a male between 26 and 45 who was hanged and then ritually decapitated. The rest of the man's body hasn't been located.

York Archaeological Trust workers excavate the Iron Age farming site where the brain was discovered in an undated picture.
The fact that the skull was found with intact jaw and neck bones shows that the head was buried fresh.
"If you moved the skull at a later date, the soft tissue would have decayed"—resulting in the jaw and vertebrae coming detached, said study co-author Jo Buckberry, an archaeologist at the University of Bradford.

Google: The Most Valuable Brand in The World
BrandFinance, a brand valuation consulting firm has rated Google as the world's most valuable brand name.
Google's brand was determined as being worth $44.2 billion, up a whopping 23 percent from 2010. The company was the only one to receive a AAA+ brand rating.
The second place is Microsoft, which is there easily because it's the largest software maker in the world. The Windows maker climbed up from number five to be second to Google.
IBM took 4th, Vodafone took 5th, Apple took 8th and AT&T rose to 10th. Apple made a huge leap to eighth place, up from 20th last year.
"The rise of the technology brands has been expected for some time, although Nokia's fall shows that it is tough to stay at the forefront of such a dynamic industry," BrandFinance CEO David Haigh said in a statement.
Wal-Mart was last year's winner but fell to 3rd in 2011.

Will the boom of tablets like iPad last long? Microsoft and Dell doubt it
With the Apple's iPad tablet computer sweeping the consumer electronics industry, the software giant Microsoft is not very bullish about the future of this new category while Dell says iPad will fail in the enterprise.
At a lunch held today in Sydney by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), Microsoft's global chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie said that he did not know whether the booming new category was here to stay.
Mundie said he believed the smartphone "as it emerges more will become your most personal computer", while laptops would occupy a space he dubbed the "portable desk".
"I don't know whether the big screen tablet pad category is going to remain with us or not," he said.
In the meanwhile, Dell's global head of marketing for large enterprises and public organisations, Andy Lark, said that iPad would ultimately fail in the enterprise.
"Apple is great if you've got a lot of money and live on an island. It's not so great if you have to exist in a diverse, open, connected enterprise; simple things become quite complex." Andy Lark said.
Andy Lark also backed Android for enterprise, "Apple has done a really nice job, they've got a great product, but the challenge they've got is that already Android is outpacing them."

Google Introduces Plus One Feature
Google's 'Plus One' will initially be limited to a mere 2% of Google's English Language users in America. The tool will be very similar to Facebook's 'Like' tool which has become universally used by websites outside of Facebook.
The feature will involve a small icon located next to each search result. Those users that are loggin into their g-mail accounts will be able to share links with friends via a host of Google services. Eventually it is hoped to spread onto Twitter and possibly even Facebook allowing users share with contacts.
The results of user recommendations will potentially influence the ranking of sites in Google's search result listings. It will lead to a more transparent and user based search engine.
Google also announced plans to expand the service to news publishers to ensure popular and relevant news is more visible.

Microsoft Pushes for the Death of IE 6
Microsoft has launched a deathwatch website to urge users who are still on the 10-year old Internet Explorer 6 browser to just stop.
"It's time to say goodbye," wrote Microsoft on a website dedicated to the cause. Although Microsoft reported statistics from web analytics firm Net Applications that worldwide usage of IE6 stands at 12 percent at present, the company said it wants to drop the browser's share to less than 1 percent, and it is asking everyone to help spread the word.
The deathwatch website details Net Applications' usage share numbers for IE6 in 43 countries, including the U.S., China, Japan, Germany and Russia. China leads usage of IE6 at 34.5 percent, followed by South Korea at 24.8 percent, India at 12.3 percent and Taiwan at 10.7 percent. The U.S. accounts for just 2.9 percent.
The website has links to reasons why users should upgrade, documentation for corporate networks that need to migrate to a new browser and banners that webmasters can embed in their sites, alerting users that they should upgrade.
Microsoft's browser is still the most heavily used in the world, with a market share of more than 50 percent, according to StatCounter.

Microsoft Cooperates with Kayak to Improve Travel Search
Microsoft's Bing search engine recently announced a partnership with Kayak to incorporate Kayak's travel search services within Bing Travel in the USA.
Kayak aggregates information from airlines, hotels, rental car companies and other travel service providers. Microsoft said that in the coming weeks, Kayak will provide search results in the U.S. from multiple cities, airports and airlines for Bing's travel search section.
This partnership between Bing and Kayak should be a good move for both companies to battle Google's potentially formidable travel search service once the ITA acquisition completes.

Adobe Unveils Wallaby to Convert Flash into HTML5
Adobe Systems has released Wallaby, a new experimental tool that converts simple Flash games and animations into HTML5.
The free, cross-platform desktop application from Adobe Labs, makes transforming Adobe Flash files, which Apple rejects from the App Store, into HTML5, so that it is readable on "devices that do not support the Flash runtimes". It turns Flash Professional files into HTML5 code, which can then be edited using any text editor or authoring tool like Dreamweaver.
"Adobe's goal is to support our customers with whatever tools they need to get their creative content onto any device," said Tom Barclay, senior product manager for Flash Professional at Adobe, when asked for a comment. "We look forward to the user feedback about the code they're generating with Wallaby and the use cases for which they end up using Wallaby. We believe Flash is the best long-term solution for things like games, video and RIAs where high levels of interactivity are required. And we believe HTML5 is just as imperative for things like banner ads, especially for devices such as iPad and iPhone."
Wallaby aslo supports batch processing and diagnostic reporting. With the power to script conversions or to simply drag and drop folders of .FLA files into the app, Wallaby helps developers ensure that their ads—no matter the number—reach their users, regardless of the platform.
Adobe's release of Wallaby to Adobe Labs is a way for the company to garner user input on the technology. Not all Flash elements can be 100 percent converted with the preview release toll now.
